The history of ARGENTEUS 

Mixed Choir ARGENTEUS of Szeged University Department of Music Education

The Mixed Choir „ARGENTEUS” of Szeged University Department of Music Education was founded in 1963. Under the leadership of Dr. Gábor Kovács it works since 1998 is. The members are students of the Department of Music Education. Besides of regular concerts in Hungary, the choir regularly takes part in festivals and had concerts in Italy, Poland, Austria, Macedonia, Chech Republic, Slovakia, Finland, Romania and Serbia.

 

In 2012 ehe choir won 1st Prize in Ohrid (Macedonia) at the International Choir Competition and 2nd Prize at Zoltán Kodály Hungarian Choir Competition.

 

In 2013 it was category winner of Budapest International Choir Competition.

 

In 2015 1st Prize and "Best conductor" Prize in Ohrid. Several Hungarian composers dedicated their works to ARGENTEUS and its leader.

 

The choir bears the title „Concert Choir”, the highest qualification of the Hungarian Council of Choirs.

Our conductor:

GÁBOR KOVÁCS

Dr. habil. Gábor Kovács PhD gratuated at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music as choir conductor in 1990.

He followed his studies in London at the Guildhall School of Music and obtained his PhD degree at the Queen’s University in Belfast (Northern Ireland).

 

He is an associate professor of Szeged University and teacher of Choral Conducting and History of Music at the Department of Music Education.

 

Besides ARGENTEUS, he is the leader of the international prize holder vocal ensemble “... canticum novum” performing early and contemporary music, first performer of several pieces of Hungarian composers dedicated to him and his choirs.
